Surrounded by family members, educators, and employers, the students were recognized for successfully translating their education, training, and industry-recognized credentials into employment opportunities. The event celebrates students who have chosen to enter the workforce directly and highlights the strong partnerships between WSWHE BOCES and regional employers.
“WSWHE BOCES recognizes the increasing demand for a skilled workforce in our region. Signing Day is our way of recognizing and thanking our students who are stepping in to meet that need and our business partners who support our students and our programs,” said Jared Davis, Director of Career and Technical Education.
Matthew Whitbeck, Co-Owner/Manager of Whitbeck Construction, served as the keynote speaker. He encouraged students to take pride in the careers they are beginning and the opportunities ahead.
“Few careers offer the satisfaction of standing back at the end of the day and seeing something tangible that you helped create. You can point to a building, a project, or a completed job and say, ‘I did that.’ There is a tremendous sense of pride in that work, and there are endless opportunities for those who continue learning, work hard, and stay committed to their craft,” said Whitbeck.
The excitement of the occasion was reflected in the warm welcome students received from their future employers. Businesses presented their new hires with caps, t-shirts, substantial tool kits they will use on the job, and other gifts. One employer even arrived with an oversized check for a signing bonus.
